The Los Angeles Dodgers pulled off one of the larger moves of the winter meetings this week, reportedly coming to terms on a contract with star closer Edwin Diaz on Tuesday, according to The Athletic's Will Sammon.
Though the Dodgers have won back-to-back World Series championships, the team is still actively pursuing some of the top players available this offseason. Los Angeles has very few holes in its roster but could use an impact bat in the outfield or more infield depth.
One player who could fulfill both of those needs is St. Louis Cardinals second baseman Brendan Donovan. The Athletic's Fabian Ardaya and Katie Woo reported Wednesday that the Dodgers remain interested in trading for the 28-year-old All-Star this offseason.
..."The Dodgers also remain interested in exploring the trade market, per league sources, and Brendan Donovan remains on their radar," Ardaya and Woo wrote. "The St. Louis Cardinals’ utility player has been one of the most discussed names on the trade market this winter. And with the Cardinals rebuilding, it’s widely accepted that Donovan will be moved. Donovan primarily played second base for St. Louis last season but has plenty of experience in left field and can slot in at right field or at shortstop."
Donovan is a versatile player who could play multiple roles for the Dodgers. The 28-year-old is under team control through the 2027 season and is projected to receive roughly $5.75 million in arbitration this season, according to Spotrac. Donovan is a prime trade candidate for the rebuilding Cardinals, especially after being named an All-Star for the first time this season.
It's hard to believe that the Dodgers could improve even further, but the team remains one of the top suitors to land Donovan this offseason.
