It seems the Michigan Wolverines are casting a wide net in their search for a new head coach.

Twenty-four hours after firing Sherrone Moore for allegedly having an inappropriate relationship with a team staffer, the school has its sights set on a highly regarded coach in the NFL.

According to Cleveland.com’s Mary Kay Cabot, the Wolverines have expressed interest in speaking with Cleveland Browns offensive coordinator Tommy Rees, whose stock is suddenly red-hot with another wave of head-coach openings popping up.

“Michigan has interest in Browns offensive coordinator Tommy Rees for their head coach vacancy, a league source tells cleveland.com,” Cabot wrote. “… Rees would likely take the interview considering he talked to Penn State about their head coach vacancy last week before it went to Matt Campbell, as previously reported.”

The 33-year-old Rees was reportedly a target of Penn State recently before it hired Matt Campbell as James Franklin’s successor. He also was a frontrunner for the North Carolina head-coaching job last year before the Tar Heels hired Bill Belichick.

Rees has had plenty of public backing from legendary former Alabama head coach Nick Saban, who’s heralded him as “one of the brightest offensive minds” he’s worked with. Rees was an offensive coordinator with the Crimson Tide under Saban.

As far as whether Rees has any interest in the Michigan job, he isn’t tipping his hand.

“I’m going to just keep my focus here right now,” he said.

The Browns have expressed their desire to keep Rees around, especially with rookie quarterback Shedeur Sanders thriving since taking over as the team’s starter.

Others believed to be in the mix for the Michigan job are Alabama head coach Kalen DeBoer, Washington head coach Jedd Fisch, Arizona State head coach Kenny Dillingham, and Los Angeles Chargers defensive coordinator Jesse Minter.
