LA28 Reveals Vibrant Visual Identity Drawing from California's Superbloom Phenomenon
The Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games debuts a striking design language rooted in the rare natural spectacle of California's wildflower explosions
LA28 organizers unveiled their comprehensive visual identity system Monday, introducing a chromatic design framework that will permeate every touchpoint of the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games experience.
This cohesive aesthetic language will manifest across the entire Olympic ecosystem—from accreditation badges and venue wayfinding to staff apparel, competition facilities, and the athletes village infrastructure.
The design philosophy centers on California's superbloom—a cyclical botanical phenomenon occurring roughly once per decade when optimal spring conditions trigger mass wildflower germination across the state's diverse topography, transforming hillsides, valleys, and arid landscapes into vivid tapestries of color.
LA28's creative team conducted extensive archival research into previous Olympic and Paralympic visual systems, drawing particular inspiration from the iconic 1984 Los Angeles Games while developing this contemporary interpretation.
The Bird of Paradise—Los Angeles' designated municipal flower—anchors the primary color palette with its distinctive orange hues. This foundational element expands into a complete Superbloom collection comprising 13 distinct floral references. The design system employs a rigorous grid structure, with strategic visual density modulation near competition zones to minimize athlete distraction during performance.
Geoff Engelhardt, LA28's head of brand design, articulated the conceptual framework in a statement: "We wanted the look to feel like Los Angeles itself. LA is a city of incredible creativity, sitting at the intersection of sport and entertainment, and the Games will bring the world together here in 2028."
The visual identity received its public debut Monday evening at Intuit Dome—the future basketball venue for the 2028 Games. Attendees at the Los Angeles Clippers matchup encountered a large-scale digital presentation of the LA28 aesthetic on the plaza's exterior display infrastructure, followed by an in-arena reveal video.
